THE SHORT ANSWER
Startup credits reduce cash spending for a limited period; discounted API rates reduce the price of eligible usage. Compare both against the bill you will pay after the promotion ends. The largest advertised credit is not necessarily the best offer if it cannot cover your models, account or expected workload.

Where can startups look for AI credits?
AWS Activate advertises up to $200,000 for eligible startups, with additional possibilities for some AI businesses. AWS also documents that Activate credits can cover eligible third-party models on Amazon Bedrock. Review exclusions and account terms before assigning those credits to a model budget. Google’s AI startup program advertises up to $350,000 in cloud credits, subject to eligibility and applicable terms. That is not a universal grant or a promise that every AI service is covered. Google Cloud AI startup program.

How do you value a credit offer?
Use the amount you can actually spend on eligible services before expiry. A hypothetical $10,000 award is worth at most $3,000 to a team expecting $3,000 of qualifying use during the eligible period, unless additional useful spending is already planned.
Do not create unnecessary usage to consume a credit. The objective is to fund useful work, not maximize a dashboard’s redeemed balance.
What is the difference between credits and lower prices?
Suppose Route A costs $1,000 per month and includes $3,000 of eligible credits. Route B costs $600 per month with no credits. Over three months, A could have zero inference cash outlay while B costs $1,800. Over twelve identical months, A costs $9,000 after credits and B costs $7,200.
This is an illustrative comparison assuming unchanged rates and full credit eligibility. It shows why you should calculate both promotional and steady-state spending.
Can you combine credits and discounts?
Only where the relevant terms allow it. Check the billing account, service, region, model and payment arrangement. A cloud credit typically does not become transferable balance at an unrelated API aggregator.
Also check whether the promotion requires a commitment, partner affiliation or a minimum spend. A discounted rate can still be expensive if it purchases capacity you will not use.
How should a startup plan the transition?
Track remaining credit and forecast its exhaustion date. Maintain a cost model using ordinary rates from the beginning. That prevents a feature from appearing profitable only because a temporary subsidy hides its inference cost.
