Free AI Models via API: What the Limits Actually Mean

THE SHORT ANSWER

Free AI API access usually means a limited model selection, a usage allowance or promotional credits. It rarely means unlimited production inference. Before relying on a free endpoint, check request limits, token limits, eligibility, data-use terms and what happens when the allowance ends.

Documentation checked October 15, 2026.

What kinds of free access exist?

A free model endpoint has zero listed inference price under its current terms. A trial grants a finite balance. A startup credit covers eligible spending for an approved account. A consumer chat subscription may provide no general-purpose API access at all.

These are different offers. A model being downloadable also does not make hosted inference free: running it still consumes hardware and operational resources.

Which providers offer documented free access?

Z.AI’s pricing page lists GLM-4.7-Flash and GLM-4.5-Flash as free. Availability and account capacity still need checking. Z.AI model pricing.

Google documents a free tier for selected Gemini API models, with model-specific availability and different terms from paid access. Gemini API pricing.

OpenRouter’s pricing page lists a free plan with a 50-request daily limit at the check date. Its limits documentation provides account-specific usage information and explains that free-model quotas depend on applicable account policy. Check your actual allowance rather than assuming an old screenshot applies. OpenRouter pricing and limits.

How quickly can a free quota run out?

Consider an illustrative allowance of 50 requests per day. A workflow that uses five calls per user action supports only ten actions before retries. A coding agent or research workflow can consume that allowance much faster than a simple chatbot.

Request quotas also say little about token capacity. A few long-context calls may hit a separate token or concurrency limit before the request counter is exhausted.

Can you use a free API in production?

It depends on the service terms and your product’s tolerance for interruptions. For an optional internal experiment, a small allowance may be enough. For a paid customer feature, plan for exhausted quotas and changed availability.

If you offer a paid fallback, make that spending explicit and bounded. Otherwise a free prototype can become an unexpectedly billed service when traffic increases.

Are the privacy terms the same as paid access?

Do not assume so. Google’s pricing documentation distinguishes data-use treatment between free and paid offerings, subject to its applicable terms. Review the actual tier used for a request before sending customer information. Gemini pricing and data-use notes.

Is Tokely a free API?

Tokely’s published pricing describes funded, usage-based access. This article does not promise a free allowance or signup credit. For predictable paid usage, compare the current model rates with the cost of handling free-tier interruptions, then follow the quickstart.
